EMSC FDSN Event Web Service

Event time vs. retrieval time

“Event time” is when the earthquake happened according to the reporting agency. “Retrieval time” is when this site last requested the data. An event only appears after a seismic network detects, processes and publishes it, which can take minutes to hours.

Preliminary data and revisions

Initial data is preliminary: magnitude, location or depth can be revised, or an event deleted. Different agencies may report slightly different magnitudes for the same quake; we show the one EMSC publishes.

Source data vs. site presentation

Magnitudes, coordinates, depths and the reporting agency come from EMSC unchanged. Colours, circle sizes, conversion to Panama time and summaries are produced by this site. The base map is © OpenStreetMap contributors.
